The Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat has opened a tender for L5 metro depot upgrades in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona. This €7 million contract aims to modernise the infrastructure to meet current and future transport demands.

According to a statement released on Monday, the primary objective is to expand train parking capacity and adapt the line for increased service levels. Officials describe these L5 metro depot upgrades as vital for improving maintenance efficiency. Therefore, they will facilitate a planned increase in supply over the coming years.

Construction is scheduled to commence this summer and will last for 15 months. Meanwhile, the project scope includes:
- The creation of two new parking spaces for commercial trains.
- Installation of new roofing structures.
- Adaptation of tracks for auxiliary railway vehicles.
- Expansion of storage areas.
- Installation of photovoltaic panels to improve energy sustainability.
L5 Metro Depot Upgrades: A Broader Infrastructure Strategy
The department highlighted that these maintenance and depot upgrades are often less visible than station renovations. However, they are key to improving the transport system. Consequently, enhancing these facilities ensures higher service reliability for daily users.
This initiative is part of a wider investment programme across the Barcelona metro network. In addition, similar expansion works are underway for the L3 line workshops and depots. Furthermore, a renewal of the L4 line signalling system is in progress. The network is also implementing new technology for remote operation systems. This modernises the management of the entire grid and complements accessibility works on the L5 line at Plaça de Sants.
