Barcelona’s iconic Boqueria market may soon undergo radical changes to reclaim its role as a space for residents rather than just a tourist hotspot. City officials are considering plans to enclose the market with walls and introduce turnstile entry, charging visitors €5 to enter.

‘It is natural that tourists come, as La Rambla is a passageway for anyone arriving in the city by sea or land,’ explained Màxim López, director of the Municipal Institute of Markets and Commerce. However, he noted that the market has lost its original purpose as a place of daily shopping for locals.
The proposal would require approval by the merchants’ board. López emphasised that all options are on the table, as the Boqueria must ‘recover its essence’ to remain relevant. Turning the open structure into a controlled-access site is intended to balance the needs of residents with the demands of millions of annual visitors.
For now, the plan is still under debate, but the idea of charging entry marks a sharp break from tradition in one of Barcelona’s most famous landmarks.
