Stallholders at Barcelona’s iconic La Boqueria market have decisively rejected opening on Sundays and public holidays. This decision applies during the upcoming high tourist season, from 15 May to 15 September. The vote, held last Wednesday, prioritises work-life balance over extended operating hours. La Boqueria, located directly on La Rambla, is one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Nearly 70% of votes opposed the extended opening, according to market sources. This marks the fourth official survey of stallholder opinions on the matter. The result consistently reflects a preference for maintaining the current schedule. This decision ensures the market’s traditional rhythm continues.

Stallholders Prioritise Work-Life Balance

Jordi Mas, President of the Associació de Comerciants de la Boqueria (Boqueria Traders’ Association), commented on the consultation. He stated it “has been a display of the maturity and commitment” of the market community. Mas believes the majority result “reflects the desire to preserve the essence of a market that cares for its product, but above all for the people behind each stall.” This commitment supports the market’s long-standing values.

The market, a major draw on La Rambla, is situated in one of Barcelona’s highly visited areas. These zones are authorised to open on Sundays and public holidays during peak season. This authorisation typically runs from mid-May to September. However, La Boqueria will not join this campaign of extraordinary openings. This sets it apart from other businesses in tourist zones.

New Voting System Implemented

The recent vote introduced a new system for collecting opinions. This system used a coefficient of ownership, assigning one vote value per square metre of stall space. For example, a stall of 5 square metres equated to 5 votes. This method gave larger establishments more weight in the decision-making process. Approximately 2,000 votes were in play, corresponding to the total commercial area.

Participants cast a total of 1,574 votes in response to the direct question. The question was: “Do you want to open your establishment on Sundays and public holidays from 15 May to 15 September?” Of these, 1,086 votes (69%) favoured maintaining the current market calendar. Conversely, 488 participants (31%) voted in favour of extraordinary opening. This clear majority reinforces the stallholders’ position.

Market’s Identity and Future

This decision underscores the market’s commitment to its identity. La Boqueria aims to remain “a benchmark for seasonal and excellent produce for all Barcelona citizens,” according to market sources. The outcome also “highlights the importance of family reconciliation and rest for the professionals of the city’s most emblematic market.” This balance is crucial for the market’s long-term sustainability.

Last year, the market experienced a slight decrease in footfall, around 5%. El Periódico Barcelona attributed this to extensive construction work on La Rambla and a moderation in tourism. Despite this, foreign visitors still significantly outnumber local shoppers. The market remains a vital part of Barcelona’s cultural and culinary landscape.

Looking Ahead

The decision ensures La Boqueria will continue its traditional operating hours. This prioritises the well-being of its stallholders. It also reinforces the market’s unique character amidst Barcelona’s bustling tourist landscape. This choice reflects a broader trend of valuing quality of life for workers.
