La Bressola has officially launched its 50th anniversary celebrations, marking a half-century of Catalan-language education in Northern Catalonia. The organisation commemorates this significant milestone while prioritising its long-term financial stability. Indeed, the anniversary activities commenced on Thursday with an event at the Casa de la Catalanitat in Perpignan (Perpinyà).

These festivities serve as both a retrospective of the schools’ history and a platform to address the network’s future viability. Meanwhile, the organisation has made it clear that securing sustainable funding remains its primary focus.

La Bressola 50th anniversary funding focus

Guillem Nivet, president of La Bressola, addressed the current economic landscape. He noted that recent extraordinary subsidies have been crucial, allowing the schools to ‘gain time’ in a difficult climate. However, Nivet stressed that a structural solution is necessary. ‘I have no doubt that we will address the financial situation,’ he emphasised, signalling a commitment to moving beyond temporary fixes.

Government support for La Bressola

The event was attended by Joan Santanach Suñol, the Secretary of Linguistic Policy for the Generalitat de Catalunya. He affirmed the government’s continued backing of the school network. ‘The Generalitat chooses the entity because it is a very interesting initiative,’ Santanach Suñol stated. Furthermore, he added that the administration intends to help the organisation as much as possible.

Cultural projects for the anniversary

Beyond the institutional focus, the La Bressola 50th anniversary celebrations will include a variety of cultural initiatives. These projects are designed to highlight the region’s heritage. Among the confirmed projects are the recording of a new documentary. In addition, there will be an album featuring North-Catalan songs.
