A major police operation in the La Mina neighbourhood of Sant Adrià de Besòs has led to the arrest of a prolific drug trafficker and the seizure of a significant cache of narcotics and modern firearms. This raid occurred amidst frequent, late-night shootings that authorities link to ongoing turf wars between rival clans.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, detained a 45-year-old man on February 24th following an investigation that began in December. Officers stormed the suspect’s flat and discovered him desperately trying to conceal evidence. As they entered, the man attempted to throw four new-generation handguns out of a window, according to police sources cited by La Vanguardia. Police described the weapons as being in perfect condition and ready for use.
A “Surgical” Strike
Police called the intervention “surgical” due to its focus on a single property. They described the haul as one of the “most outstanding and relevant” in recent memory, considering the quantity of both drugs and firearms recovered. This search yielded a substantial stash with an estimated street value of nearly €100,000.
Inside the property, officers confiscated:
- 1,140 grams of cocaine (valued at €69,711)
- 2,472 grams of hashish (valued at €16,710)
- 1,753 grams of marijuana buds (valued at €11,604)
In addition to the drugs and four pistols, police also found 97 firearm cartridges and several mobile phones. The arrested individual, who had a prior criminal record for drug trafficking, now faces charges for crimes against public health, illegal possession of weapons and explosives, and electricity fraud. The latter is a common charge linked to the power-intensive needs of indoor drug cultivation.
The Unsettling Sound of Gunfire
The raid provides a stark backdrop to the persistent climate of fear and violence in Sant Adrià de Besòs. According to a report by El Caso, the sound of gunfire has become a depressingly normal occurrence for residents.
On the Saturday evening following the raid, as many as six shots were reportedly heard in the vicinity of the Mossos d’Esquadra police station on Carrer Cristòfol de Moura. Despite a police search, no casings, armed individuals, or damage were found, and locals appeared to carry on as if nothing had happened. More shots were reportedly heard by local police in the early hours of Sunday morning. Authorities believe these incidents are rarely intended to cause injury but serve as displays of power and intimidation between rival family clans vying for control of the area’s illicit drug markets. A pervasive “law of silence,” stemming from a fear of reprisals, often prevents witnesses from coming forward, severely hampering police investigations.
An Investigation Months in the Making
The successful operation last week was not a matter of chance. Instead, it culminated from a meticulous investigation the Mossos’ Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) launched in December. The trail began during an operation to dismantle a marijuana plantation in La Mina, where investigators found evidence that pointed them towards the 45-year-old suspect.
Months of surveillance confirmed the man’s connection to a drug distribution point, leading to the raid on February 24th. The detainee appeared before a judge in Badalona last Thursday.
This major arrest highlights the ongoing battle authorities face in a neighbourhood with deep-rooted socio-economic problems. Despite significant public investment and efforts outlined in the Transformation Plan for La Mina, the area continues to struggle with crime and deprivation. As Barna.News has previously reported, some streets suffer from extreme public health issues, with residents complaining that rats, syringes, and neglect plague their community. The situation stands in stark contrast to the regeneration of nearby areas, such as the revamped Besòs waterfront, which aims to redefine the local tourism map.
