Barcelona’s new La Sagrera intermodal station is rapidly taking shape internally. Construction appears significantly more advanced than its exterior suggests, with officials targeting a 2028 completion.

Advanced Internal Construction Revealed

Recent online images, shared by users like Meridiana obres (@meridianaobres), reveal completed platforms and access points for Metro lines L9 and L10. These visuals also show connections to Rodalies commuter rail lines and bus services. The photographs demonstrate that while some sections, such as platform doors and certain escalators, still require completion, much of the core infrastructure is in place.

Mayor Pledges Significant Investment

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni announced a €260 million investment in February. This funding will revitalise the La Sagrera neighbourhood until 2031. Mayor Collboni stated, “We want the city to already be present when the new station emerges.”

This substantial investment aims to transform the area surrounding the future station. The Ajuntament seeks to integrate the new transport hub seamlessly into the urban fabric. It will serve as a crucial new railway gateway for Barcelona.

A New Gateway for Barcelona

The La Sagrera intermodal station will complement the city’s primary transport node at Sants. Mayor Collboni emphasised its role in connecting the city. He said, “connect the best Barcelona of the metro with the Barcelona of Rodalies.” The project envisions a confluence of Metro lines L4, L9, and L10. It will also integrate Rodalies lines R1, R2, and R11. This creates a vital link for residents and commuters across Catalonia.

Overcoming Past Delays

The project faced an abrupt halt in 2014 due to corruption allegations. After years of delays, construction has now regained significant momentum. Workers are currently building the structure for a large green park above the rail tracks. This park will extend over the extensive network of railway lines, creating new green spaces for the La Sagrera district.

While exterior work on the park and other elements continues, the advanced internal infrastructure signals a major step. This development brings Barcelona closer to realising a key urban and transport transformation. The station will significantly enhance connectivity for millions.
