With renovation works scheduled for completion in early 2027, the City Council has launched a programme of free activities. Las Ramblas Archaeological Tours: Medieval Walls and Curious Findings
The extensive excavations have done more than facilitate new pipework. In addition, they have unearthed significant historical treasures. Among the discoveries are sections of the 14th-century medieval wall. Furthermore, remains of the old Estudi General, the precursor to the city’s university, have been found.
Perhaps the most intriguing find has been the burial of a donkey surrounded by bronze needles. This curiosity has left experts puzzled. To explain these findings, Las Ramblas archaeological tours have been organised for 18 and 28 March. These guided walks will traverse the promenade from the upper section to the Portal de la Pau. Subsequently, they will interpret what these excavations reveal about Barcelona five centuries ago.
Documenting the Transition
For those with a creative eye, the programme includes activities to document this period of metamorphosis. Photographic walks are scheduled for 21 and 25 February. Meanwhile, they aim to create a collective visual archive of the promenade before its final design is realised.
Additionally, urban sketching sessions on 4 and 14 March will allow artists to draw the evolution of the works live. These sessions offer a unique way to observe the emerging details of the future promenade. Moreover, it promises a unified granite and porphyry pavement, increased greenery, and significantly more pedestrian space. This forms part of the city’s broader seafront transformation.
