Le Barcarès Christmas Market attracts nearly one million visitors each year, cementing its status as a major festive draw in southern France.
The market, now celebrating its 26th anniversary, has become so popular with Catalan visitors that organisers held its official presentation in Barcelona for the first time this week.

According to La Vanguardia, Catalan visitors now represent over a third of its total attendance.
Le Barcarès Christmas Market Expands To New Location
This year’s edition, which began last Saturday and runs until 4 January, has undergone significant changes. The market nearly didn’t happen due to severe overcrowding in previous years. Consequently, organisers have moved the entire event to a larger venue. The new location at the Luna Park area offers 5,000 square metres, addressing previous safety concerns.
The relocation aims to improve visitor circulation and guarantee public safety. Furthermore, the organisation has incorporated wider walkways, differentiated access points, and reinforced entry and exit flow controls. The setup includes specific parking areas and a mobility system designed to prevent congestion during peak times.
The market operates daily from 11am until 2am, maintaining its traditional structure. Meanwhile, the event also features a renewed visual theme. The Ice Museum incorporates new sculptures, and large-format decorations with lighting effects now unify the visitor route.
The venue includes the classic panoramic Ferris wheel, a covered ice rink, cabins with artisanal products, and a gastronomic space. This area showcases both French and Catalan specialities, including panellets, cured meats, and wines, strengthening cultural ties between the regions.
For Barcelona residents seeking alternative festive experiences, the Le Barcarès Christmas Market offers a popular cross-border day trip. Its success mirrors the enduring appeal of seasonal events, much like the recently opened Christmas market at La Maquinista shopping centre. The market’s growth reflects broader regional trends, including Catalonia’s record population increase, which fuels demand for leisure activities.
Ultimately, the Le Barcarès Christmas Market demonstrates how a local event can achieve international appeal. Its careful management of visitor numbers and enhanced facilities should ensure its continued success for years to come.
