Barcelona’s IDEAL Centre of Digital Arts has launched an ambitious new exhibition that brings together two of history’s greatest rivals: Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti. Titled Leonardo versus Michelangelo, the show invites visitors to step into a 360-degree world where the genius of the Renaissance is reimagined for the digital age.

The exhibition unfolds across eight rooms, each offering a different perspective on the artists’ legacies. Through vast projections, virtual reality headsets and metaverse-inspired environments, audiences are invited not merely to admire the works but to take part in the creative rivalry that defined Florence in the early 1500s. One of the highlights is The Unfinished Battle, a 25-minute immersive film that re-examines the celebrated yet incomplete murals commissioned for the Palazzo Vecchio. Another feature allows visitors to walk at full scale around sculptural masterpieces and painted halls, as if transported to the heart of Renaissance Italy.

The staging has been created by Catalan studio Layers of Reality, blending realism and fantasy to offer a journey into the cultural ferment of the period. The experience is set to be accompanied by an original score composed by Rafael Plana, adding further drama to what IDEAL describes as a ‘digital battle royale of artistic genius’.
The exhibition runs daily from 10 am to 8 pm at IDEAL Barcelona, located in the city’s Poblenou district. Standard visits last around 90 minutes and are open to all ages, with children under three admitted free. The space is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. Tickets can be purchased directly through IDEAL Barcelona’s website for between €15-€19 depending on day/time.
By staging this clash of titans in such an innovative format, IDEAL not only celebrates the enduring power of Renaissance art but also challenges a new generation to decide: who wins, Leonardo or Michelangelo?
