Luxury hotel concierges from across Spain and Europe have gathered in Barcelona this week for a major national assembly.

More than 120 of these elite professionals, known as ‘getters’ for their ability to fulfil extraordinary guest requests, convened at the Grand Hyatt Barcelona for the annual meeting of the historic international association, Les Clefs d’Or (The Golden Keys).

The event highlights a profession that spans from the ‘pre-internet’ era to the current challenges posed by artificial intelligence.

These concierges have facilitated stays for millionaires, Hollywood stars, and high-ranking officials, guarding many of their secrets under lock and key. Furthermore, the assembly included educational days aimed at attracting future talent to the profession, workshops, and social events.

Luis Peña, a concierge at the Grand Hyatt Barcelona with 36 years of experience, embodies this legendary service. His career includes an unforgettable story where he helped a Danish guest stranded by a volcanic eruption in Iceland reach Copenhagen in time for the birth of his child. Consequently, the grateful parents named their son Luis in his honour.

“We are people capable of opening all the doors of the city where we work,” explained Mauro Torres, the delegate for Catalonia and second vice-president for Spain, who works at the Mercer Hotel. “We generate unforgettable experiences, making the impossible possible and the difficult, very easy.”

The network operates as a borderless brotherhood where contacts and knowledge are shared across generations. This was emphasised by the re-elected president for Spain, Borja Martín, head of concierge services at the Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid. The gathering allowed interaction between concierges from across the peninsula and representatives from Denmark, Peru, Italy, Portugal, and the UK.

A Brotherhood of ‘Getters’ Faces the Future

During the assembly, six new concierges received the prestigious golden pin with two crossed keys, the symbol distinguishing the association’s 4,000 members worldwide. Among them were two Barcelona-based professionals, César Baigorri and Richard Reyes, both from The One hotel, which is noted for its exceptional concierge service.

The director of the Catalan Tourism Agency, Arantxa Calvera, attended the event, thanking the concierges for their “hospitality, service, and vocation.” This recognition comes in a year where Catalonia has led Spanish tourism, accounting for nearly 20% of the national total. The profession remains a key pillar of the luxury tourism sector that drives the local economy, a sector that continues to evolve with initiatives across the city, including recent developments in urban mobility and traffic management.

Veteran concierge Manuel Pizarro, now retired after 46 years at Madrid’s Villa Magna and the honorary president of the association, shared memories of his first famous guest, Rock Hudson. His daily tasks often involved securing last-minute tickets for Champions League finals or opera performances. Similarly, Antonio Morilla, with three decades at Seville’s Alfonso XIII hotel, has served Harrison Ford, Madonna, and Tom Cruise, learning to treat all VIPs with simple, efficient respect.

These professionals unanimously agree that while artificial intelligence can assist travellers, it cannot solve complex, personalised problems. The essence of their work, they argue, lies in human connection, creativity, and a vast network of trusted contacts—a service that defines true luxury hospitality in Barcelona and beyond, much like the city’s commitment to innovative urban projects.
