L'Hospitalet de Llobregat City Council has launched its annual preventive disinfestation campaign against cockroaches in the sewage network. The initiative, which began on 13 April, aims to treat nearly 2,700 manholes before the summer heat arrives. This proactive measure seeks to control pest populations across the city.

The intensive phase of the campaign is expected to conclude during June, coinciding with the period just before higher temperatures typically begin. City Council teams have already inspected 25% of the planned manholes, applying treatments as needed. This year's strategy uses historical data from previous years and past incidence reports to focus resources effectively.

"This criterion allows us to adjust actions to the real situation on the ground," the City Council stated in a press release. "We reduce intervention in areas without detected infestations and concentrate more resources where the risk is higher." This targeted approach ensures efficiency and maximises the campaign's impact.

This preventive campaign also complements the attention given to reports from residents. Citizens communicate these issues directly to the municipal Health Service. The service will maintain its ability to respond to cockroach sightings in public spaces even after the intensive phase concludes.

Tackling Public Health Risks in L'Hospitalet

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a densely populated city of over 260,000 residents bordering Barcelona, faces significant public health challenges from urban pests. Cockroaches can carry bacteria and allergens, posing risks to residents, particularly in areas with high foot traffic and food establishments. This annual campaign is a critical part of the city's broader public health strategy.

Just days ago, the L'Hospitalet Local Police and the municipal Health Service closed a bar in the La Torrassa neighbourhood. They found a significant cockroach infestation inside the establishment, prompting immediate action. "The premises cannot reopen until the serious sanitary deficiencies are corrected," the local police announced in a statement, highlighting the severity of the issue.

This incident shows the importance of both public and private efforts in pest control. The company contracted for municipal pest control also responds to individual citizen requests for assistance. However, the City Council reminds residents that cockroach outbreaks can also occur inside private properties or individual drains, requiring homeowner attention.

Resident Responsibility for Property Maintenance

In such cases, residents' associations are responsible for managing appropriate prevention measures within their buildings. These include annual cleaning of interior drains and carrying out necessary conservation and maintenance tasks for common areas. Property owners may also need to hire a private pest control company to address internal infestations.

Proactive measures by residents are essential to support the city's wider efforts. Residents who suspect cockroach proliferation in public areas or the sewage network can report incidents through official municipal channels. They can use the L'H Ben Fet app or call the coexistence and civility incidents phone line on 93 402 94 44.

Looking ahead to September, the City Council will assess the need for a reinforcement campaign. This decision will depend on climatic conditions and the evolution of insect populations detected throughout the summer months. The aim is to ensure sustained pest control and protect public health year-round.
