L’Hospitalet councillor reports police assault after a protest against King Felipe VI’s visit turned confrontational.

According to El Periódico Barcelona, the municipal group ERC-EUiA has filed a formal complaint with the courts alleging that councillor Sílvia Casola sustained injuries during her removal by Mossos d’Esquadra officers.

The incident occurred on Monday near the Mercat de la Florida, where the monarch was celebrating L’Hospitalet’s city centenary.

The party possesses a medical report certifying Casola’s injuries. Consequently, they are pursuing legal action against what they describe as excessive force. ERC spokesperson Jaume Graells insists Casola was negotiating with police about modifying the security perimeter when officers removed her violently. “We cannot normalise this repression against the right to protest,” Graells stated during a press conference on Wednesday.

Furthermore, Graells emphasised the democratic legitimacy of the councillor compared to the monarchy. “The King hasn’t been voted for by anyone, but Sílvia Casola has been voted for in the town,” he argued. He described her treatment as “undignified,” claiming she was “humiliated” and “manhandled” when officers forcibly grabbed her arms to eject her from the area.

The security perimeter had reportedly been modified from the initial agreement about permitted protest spaces. Meanwhile, police also removed two members of the ‘Res a Celebrar’ platform alongside Casola. The municipal group has additionally criticised officers for identifying eight members of Jovent Republicà who displayed an anti-monarchy banner from a nearby apartment block.

The national executive of ERC has publicly supported the councillors. They were accompanied by the party’s national secretary for Membership and Anti-Repression Struggle, Kenia Domènech. Moreover, ERC has registered a series of questions in the Catalan Parliament demanding clarifications from the Interior Department.

These questions specifically address the police deployment and the alleged assaults and identifications during the protest. The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding public demonstrations and police conduct in Catalonia.
