L’Hospitalet de Llobregat is observing a day of mourning today following the suspected femicide of a 36-year-old woman.
The city council has called for a minute of silence and condemned the attack, which marks the ninth such case in Catalonia this year.
Mossos d’Esquadra arrested a 46-year-old man, the victim’s partner, early on Tuesday morning.

The arrest followed a violent incident at their shared home on Santa Eulàlia street. Consequently, authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal assault with a bladed weapon.
Community Response to Suspected Femicide
The council has organised a gathering for 7pm this evening at the Town Hall square. Mayor David Quirós and other officials will attend. Furthermore, official flags will fly at half-mast for 24 hours, and all municipal events are suspended during this period.
The Department of Equality and Feminism has also condemned the crime. They expressed their “mourning and support” for the victim’s family and friends. According to their data, this incident brings the total number of femicides in Catalonia since 2012 to 157.
This tragedy occurs less than a month after another suspected femicide in the same city. That previous case involved Neus S. B., a well-known community figure in the Collblanc and Torrassa neighbourhoods. The proximity of these events has heightened concern among residents and support services.
Municipal data reveals the scale of the issue locally. Between January and October this year, nearly 900 women in L’Hospitalet sought help for gender-based violence. This statistic underscores the urgent need for continued intervention and support.
Recently, Councillor Eva Menor inaugurated a new Specialised Intervention Service (SIE) in the city. The service aims to improve support for victims and combat the abuse many women still face. However, this latest case demonstrates the persistent challenges in preventing such violence.
The community’s response reflects a broader societal issue. For more context on local crime and police action, a recent major police operation targeted drug flats in Ciutat Vella, highlighting ongoing public safety efforts. Meanwhile, the city continues to grapple with tragic incidents, as seen in a separate fatal accident at Diagonal metro station last month.
