Officers from the Guàrdia Urbana have shut down an illegal casino operating inside a bar in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. The raid, which took place on Wednesday in the Sant Josep neighbourhood, uncovered a clandestine operation involving table games played with real money and unlicensed betting.

The establishment, located on Carrer del Canigó, was running a full-fledged gambling den without the necessary permits. According to a report by El Caso, police entered the premises to conduct a full inspection. Indeed, they immediately discovered tables with large quantities of cash, clearly being used for high-stakes games. The owner had reportedly converted the bar into an illicit gaming hall to generate extra income, completely disregarding regulations.

A Pattern of Illicit Activity

This operation is part of a broader police effort to tackle crime and regulatory breaches in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona’s most populous municipality. Local authorities have been increasing pressure on problematic establishments that flout the law and contribute to public order issues. This latest raid highlights a continued focus on stamping out underground economies, from illegal gambling to organised crime. For instance, national and local police forces recently collaborated on an operation where they successfully dismantled a drug network operating between L’Hospitalet and the Basque Country.

The Generalitat’s Directorate General of Tributes and Gaming strictly regulates all gambling activities in Catalonia, issuing licences and overseeing compliance. Operating a venue for betting without such a licence constitutes a serious offence, leading to significant fines and potential closure.

Serious Safety Risks Uncovered

Beyond the illegal gambling, investigators also discovered a severe safety violation that put patrons at significant risk. They found an emergency exit in the building completely blocked, a breach that could have had tragic consequences in the event of a fire or other emergency requiring a swift evacuation.

Following the inspection, the Guàrdia Urbana documented all the irregularities and filed an official report. The owner of the establishment now faces sanctions for multiple infractions, including the unlicensed gambling operation and the critical safety failing. Officials have not commented on whether any of the patrons present during the raid will face penalties.

The problem of clandestine gambling dens is not unique to L’Hospitalet. Police recently uncovered a similar case in the nearby city of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, where officers found a venue hosting illegal card games and mahjong. In that instance, the operators reportedly defied an initial order to cease their activities. These incidents suggest a persistent challenge for law enforcement in curbing illegal gambling networks across the Barcelona metropolitan area. This fight often runs parallel to crackdowns on other illicit enterprises, such as the recent efforts to tackle illegal tourist flats in Castelldefels.

The municipal police in L’Hospitalet have affirmed their commitment to ensuring public safety and regulatory compliance, indicating that inspections and operations of this nature will continue.
