Barcelona’s first modern shopping centre, L’Illa Diagonal, is celebrating the end of a full refurbishment with a weekend of open-air spectacle, circus, live music and dance, running from 18 to 20 September. The official reopening begins at 18:00 on Thursday 18 September and features civic representatives alongside mayor Jaume Collboni, before a headline concert by singer Ramon Mirabet.

The overhaul, part of a €32 million investment, has refreshed both the interior and the surrounding Jardins de Sant Joan de Déu, where a funambulist will walk a 60-metre line more than 20 metres above the ground. A vertical dance piece by Del Revés adds to a programme of free, capacity-limited performances.

Outside, more than 8,000 m² of gardens have been redesigned by Batlleiroig with new play zones, water features, an amphitheatre and habitat improvements. The 200-metre Umbracle now doubles as a climate-resilient shaded promenade and gastronomic strip with four terraces. Inside, upgraded common areas and lighting sit alongside energy-efficiency measures, including solar panels projected to cut annual emissions by over 75,000 kg of CO₂.
