Barcelona urban aesthetics have received a surprising endorsement from a Madrid-based architect, who credits a historic city campaign for the capital’s visual harmony. In a video analysis, Saz explained his frequent sense of surprise when visiting.

It’s not just the architectural quality, he notes, but the widespread respect for building exteriors. “The facades are generally clean,” Saz observed.
Barcelona Urban Aesthetics Rooted in 1985 CampaignThe architect identifies the key difference as a specific municipal initiative. He highlights the ‘Barcelona, Ponte Guapa’ (Barcelona, Make Yourself Beautiful) campaign, launched on 11 December 1985.
Mayor Pasqual Maragall pushed a comprehensive plan. It didn’t just focus on facades. The campaign also targeted the recovery of interior block courtyards, party walls, rooftops, and fences. However, it even aimed to improve hygiene conditions in public establishments.
“Urbanism sets the rules for architects,” Saz stated. “They divide plots, say how high you can build, what you must align with or set back. However, a myriad of rules end up making the city what it is.” For him, the urban field is key to a city’s perception.
A well-maintained environment improves quality of life, Saz argues. It also attracts tourism and revalues heritage. Urban studies indicate that a city’s visual quality influences its inhabitants’ sense of security and wellbeing.
In contrast, Saz notes that Madrid has never promoted a specific beautification campaign of this magnitude. “Maybe it’s because we’ve never had an Olympics,” he mused. However, while praising Madrid’s vibrant life, he criticises its inconsistent streetscapes.
Overall, Saz’s analysis suggests that Barcelona’s disciplined approach to its built environment, initiated decades ago, continues to pay dividends. It creates a more cohesive and visually pleasing experience for residents and visitors alike.
