Travellers using the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line should expect longer journey times to persist until December 2026. Spain’s railway infrastructure manager, Adif, has confirmed this extension. Consequently, the average 25-minute increase in travel times will remain in place. This decision follows a direct request from the route’s commercial operators: Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo. They sought greater operational stability and scheduling certainty.

While the extension prolongs slower services, the rationale is grounded in reliability and safety. According to Adif, the modified schedule provides necessary windows for maintenance teams. Therefore, they can carry out infrastructure conservation tasks without disrupting commercial services. Notably, the proposal originated from the train operators themselves. Facing scheduling uncertainty in recent weeks, the companies requested a fixed timetable. This allows them to sell tickets with confidence and visibility, rather than risking last-minute cancellations or delays.

Adjustments to Late-Night Services on the Madrid-Barcelona Line
Alongside the extended journey times, the agreement involves suppressing the last daily trains on the high-speed corridor. This reduction in late-night frequency is designed to maximise the overnight window available for track work. However, overall passenger capacity will not be reduced. Operators have committed to relocating affected passengers to the nearest available services. To accommodate this volume, companies will increasingly utilise double composition trains. This involves joining two units together to maintain seat availability.
These operational changes have already begun to take effect, with some adjustments applied recently. Passengers affected by the rescheduling are currently being notified via email. This follows recent cancellations and longer journey times on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line.
