The southern corridor of Rodalies will face significant disruption as Adif prepares major maintenance works on a tunnel and two bridges between Sitges and Garraf. The project, budgeted at €3.74 million, will leave the line operating on a single track for an estimated three months.

The works, initially planned for late 2025, include structural reinforcement of the Cala de Aiguadolç bridge and the Garraf viaduct. Both are perched on coastal cliffs and have suffered from years of marine erosion. A 56-metre tunnel near Sitges will also undergo strengthening of its slab, beams and pillars.

Adif has not yet confirmed when the project will begin, nor the precise contingency measures to be applied. The responsibility for defining adjusted services lies with Renfe, which will have to adapt to the restricted single-track capacity.

Passenger groups, including the platform Dignitat a les Vies, have denounced the plan as ‘unacceptable’. They argue that alternatives have not been seriously considered and warn the cut will exacerbate problems on an already fragile service. Current forecasts suggest that the R2 Sud line will be reduced from four trains per hour to just two between Castelldefels and Sant Vicenç de Calders. Regional services would also be halved, leaving only one train per hour.

The criticism does not stem from opposition to maintenance itself. Representatives insist they welcome long-overdue investment but are demanding a plan that minimises disruption.

The Garraf works highlight the precarious state of Catalonia’s railway infrastructure, where coastal exposure and underinvestment have fuelled ongoing reliability issues. Commuters now face months of uncertainty over how services will adapt when the works are finally scheduled.
