Urban music fans in Barcelona face disappointment as the Maleducats festival has abruptly cancelled its upcoming 2026 edition. Originally scheduled for 9 May at the city’s sprawling Parc del Fòrum, organisers announced on Monday that the one-day event was called off due to insurmountable logistical problems.

In a statement released on their official Instagram account, festival promoters The Project cited “problems related to the technical logistics of the setup” as the primary reason. Reportedly, these complications made it impossible to erect the necessary infrastructure, preventing the event from proceeding safely and as planned on the iconic seafront venue.
First reported by Metrópoli Abierta, this news has disappointed thousands of fans. Many had already purchased tickets for what promised to be a major event in Barcelona’s musical calendar.
High-Profile Lineup Left in Limbo
The cancellation scuppers a highly anticipated lineup featuring major figures from the Spanish and Catalan urban music scenes. Headliners included acclaimed Mallorcan rapper and singer Rels B and rising Catalan artist Lia Kali. Their participation had generated significant excitement online.
The Parc del Fòrum, a vast outdoor space known for hosting world-renowned festivals like Primavera Sound, was set to provide a grand stage for the event. Its cancellation leaves a noticeable gap in the spring schedule for fans of the genre.
A Promise to Return
Despite the setback, organisers were quick to assure the public that this is not the end for the Maleducats brand. They framed the cancellation as a postponement rather than a permanent halt, setting a new target for their return.
“This is not a goodbye,” the official statement read. “We will meet again in 2027, with more strength, learning, and enthusiasm than ever.”
This forward-looking message suggests that the promoters are committed to resolving the logistical hurdles that plagued the 2026 edition and intend to relaunch the festival next year.
Automatic Refunds for Ticket Holders
Addressing ticket holders’ immediate concern, the festival has confirmed a straightforward and automatic refund process. Organisers issued a reassuring message, stating no forms or formal claims would be necessary to retrieve funds.
The full ticket price will be automatically reimbursed to the original payment method. While the process is automated, the statement noted that reimbursement times may vary slightly depending on individual financial institutions’ policies.
Maleducats’ cancellation serves as a stark reminder of the complex challenges involved in staging large-scale events, even in an experienced city like Barcelona. This occurs while the city’s cultural scene otherwise thrives, with events such as the Mostra Festival for avant-garde music and the popular Time Out Fest proceeding as planned. Although some events, like the Poblenou Carnival party, were cancelled due to new civic regulations, the Maleducats case appears to stem from internal production difficulties rather than external pressures.
