Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana experienced unusual late-season snowfall this week, blanketing the mountain range in white. The unseasonal weather saw temperatures drop significantly across the island, bringing the snow line down to between 700 and 800 metres in altitude.

Unseasonal Conditions in the Mountains

Local authorities deployed snow ploughs early in the morning to clear the Ma-10 road, which traverses the mountain range. The areas most affected by the snow were around the Monnàber tunnel and Cúber. Despite the significant snowfall, officials confirmed that road closures were not necessary, ensuring continued access for residents and visitors.

Roads Cleared Amidst Snowfall

This snowfall stands out particularly as it occurred near April, a time when such winter conditions are highly unusual for Mallorca. The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, typically experiences snow during the colder winter months. However, a late-season cold snap brought these unexpected conditions to the Balearic island.

Impact on Mallorca’s Landscape

The event highlights the variability of weather patterns, even in Mediterranean climates. While picturesque, such late-season snow can impact local flora and fauna unaccustomed to prolonged cold. For residents and the tourism sector, it presented a striking, albeit temporary, change to the island’s typical spring landscape.

As temperatures will likely rise, the snow will probably melt quickly, returning the Serra de Tramuntana to its usual spring appearance. This brief winter interlude serves as a reminder of nature’s unpredictable beauty.
