Barcelona metro safety concerns have resurfaced after a man died following a tragic accident at Diagonal station on Saturday night.

The incident occurred on Line 3 when the victim lost his balance and fell onto the tracks just as a train was entering the station, according to police sources who reviewed security footage.

The Metropolitan Transport System (TMB) confirmed the emergency response teams from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) attended to the man at the scene.

Furthermore, they transported him alive to a nearby hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries hours later.

Barcelona Metro Safety Under Scrutiny Again

Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this latest Barcelona metro incident. However, preliminary findings suggest the fall was accidental, with camera footage showing the victim misstepping at the platform edge.

The train operator reportedly had no opportunity to avoid the collision as the fall coincided exactly with the train’s arrival. This marks the second fatal accident at the same Diagonal Line 3 station within six months, raising questions about platform safety measures.

Meanwhile, another similar tragedy occurred at this identical station in June when another man accidentally fell onto the tracks as a train approached. That previous incident also took place during nighttime hours, with witnesses suggesting alcohol may have been a factor.

The repeated nature of these accidents has prompted calls for enhanced safety reviews across Barcelona’s transport network. Consequently, authorities are examining whether additional preventive measures might be necessary at high-traffic stations.

Transport officials have yet to comment on potential safety upgrades, but the pattern of incidents at Diagonal station suggests particular attention may be warranted. The ongoing investigation will determine whether any structural or operational changes could prevent future tragedies.
