The collision occurred on the heavily-trafficked Avenida de Esplugues in the Baix Llobregat municipality. According to an initial report by the Catalan news outlet El Caso, the young man reportedly crossed at a pedestrian crossing, distracted by his mobile phone, and failed to see the red signal.

As a motorcycle correctly proceeded through the junction on a green light, the victim realised his error. He then fatally attempted to step back towards the pavement, inadvertently moving into the motorcycle’s path. The impact threw the South American national against a metal safety railing installed alongside the Trambaix tram line. He suffered a violent blow to the head and fell unconscious.

Investigation Underway

Paramedics from Catalonia’s Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) quickly arrived at the scene. Despite extensive resuscitation manoeuvres, the man’s severe injuries proved fatal. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the accident scene.

The Guàrdia Urbana de Cornellà also attended, securing the area for emergency services and commencing their investigation. Local police have now formally opened a case to clarify the exact sequence of events. Officers are collecting physical evidence and gathering statements from the motorcyclist and witnesses.

A Recurrent Tragedy on Urban Roads

Avenida de Esplugues is a major artery in Cornellà de Llobregat, a municipality of over 87,000 residents that forms a critical part of the Barcelona metropolitan area. The road runs parallel to the T1 and T2 tram lines, with the Ignasi Iglésias stop located near the site of the incident.

This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of ‘distracted walking’ risks, a growing concern for road safety experts worldwide. While the motorcyclist was reportedly not at fault, motorcycle incidents are frequent on Catalan roads. Just this year, a motorcyclist died in a collision with a truck in Barcelona’s Zona Franca, marking the city’s fourth traffic death of 2026. Another fatal motorcycle accident in Renau, Tarragona, prompted a separate investigation.

The Guàrdia Urbana’s investigation will seek to provide a definitive account of this morning’s tragic events. No information has been released regarding the motorcycle rider’s condition.
