Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of Alex, a 53-year-old man, in Barcelona's Sant Genís dels Agudells neighbourhood. An assailant attacked him with a bladed weapon from behind in Plaça de Meguidó on Saturday night. Alex, a Spanish national well-known in the community, reportedly intervened in a fight between several individuals under the influence of alcohol.
Investigation Underway in Horta District
ElCaso.com reported early on Sunday that the altercation escalated, leading to Alex's fatal injury. He attempted to de-escalate the confrontation and suffered the worst consequences. Medical personnel from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) attended to him at the scene. They managed to stabilise him before transporting him to hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Mossos d'Esquadra deployed to the area immediately following the incident. They searched for the perpetrators but made no arrests at the time. Homicide specialists from the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Barcelona region have now taken over the case. This adds to their ongoing investigations, including the recent death of a Montenegrin mobster shot dead near Diagonal Mar in Sant Martí, who also died in hospital, ElCaso.com reported.
Community Reacts to Tragic Loss
Police sources stated investigators could identify the perpetrator of Saturday's stabbing shortly. The individuals involved in the fight and the attack are reportedly known to frequent the area. They often sit on benches and stairs near the square where the incident occurred. Neighbours told ElCaso.com that this group frequently causes noise and tension. However, they also emphasised that Sant Genís dels Agudells is typically a quiet neighbourhood, and such a violent event had never happened before.
Identifying these individuals, whom everyone recognises but whose names are largely unknown, will be crucial. This identification will help clarify who attacked Alex and confirm the primary investigative theory: that he intervened to stop the fight. Witnesses also informed the Mossos d'Esquadra that the fight began elsewhere in the square. One of the involved parties left and then returned armed. Investigators are maintaining caution regarding the facts. The duty court has declared the investigation under seal.
Alex Remembered by Local Residents
Alex was a familiar face in the Sant Genís dels Agudells neighbourhood, even though he did not reside there. He leaves behind young children. He had recently divorced and regularly brought his children to the area. One of his children plays football for a club in the nearby Penitents area. At the time of the incident, Alex was at one of the bars located in the civic centre on Plaça de Meguidó, situated on Avinguda de Jordà.
Earlier that day, the neighbourhood had hosted a market organised by local traders. This event proceeded without issues and under favourable weather conditions. The subsequent fight, which had no connection to the market, marred what had been a festive Saturday in this residential Barcelona district. The community has since created a small memorial altar at the site where Alex was fatally wounded, remembering his presence and tragic death. The ongoing police investigation aims to bring those responsible to justice, providing clarity and closure for the community and Alex's family.
