The Barcelona Court of Instruction reaffirmed his imprisonment, according to the Agència Catalana de Notícies. The Third Court of Violence Against Women ordered his provisional detention without bail after police recently arrested the alleged perpetrator at Quatre Camins penitentiary, where he was already serving a previous sentence.

The man, now 25, had been in prison since 2018 for other sexual offences committed as a minor, El Periódico reported. He allegedly committed the Montjuïc Park rape during a penitentiary leave, which current regulations permit.

Details of the Alleged Attack

The incident for which he now faces trial occurred in February. The man reportedly assaulted the victim from behind at midday on a rainy day. She was walking dogs in the Jardins de Costa i Llobera, a popular area within Montjuïc Park.

He then dragged her to a secluded area, where he allegedly beat and assaulted her for 45 minutes. The attacker fled afterwards, and the victim sought help before paramedics took her to a medical centre.

Rising Sexual Assault Concerns

This case follows another recent arrest by the Mossos d’Esquadra of a man linked to two sexual assaults in the Sant Andreu district. Sexual offences are a major concern for police in Barcelona, a city home to 1.6 million residents.

Data shows sexual assaults have increased in the city in recent years. Hospital Clínic, a specialist centre in Barcelona, reported a 15% rise in cases by mid-2023, the latest available data. The hospital attended to 784 cases in 2024, averaging two assaults per day.

Authorities continue to process the case against the 25-year-old man. The ongoing rise in sexual assault incidents highlights persistent challenges for public safety in Barcelona.
