A man suffered knife wounds near the Casino de Barcelona in the Port Olímpic area on Friday night, leading to the arrest of one suspect. The incident occurred around 22:30 at Carrer de la Marina, 15, a busy part of the city popular with both residents and tourists.
Emergency medical services (Servei d'Emergències Mèdiques, SEM) treated the victim, who sustained an injury to the glute, before transferring him to Hospital del Mar for further care. Initial reports suggested the victim was a security guard working in the Port Olímpic area; however, the Mossos d'Esquadra press office stated they could not confirm this detail. The attack may have involved a group of seven or eight individuals, with sources from the Ajuntament confirming multiple people were involved in the assault.
The Guàrdia Urbana arrested one alleged attacker at the scene, subsequently handing him over to the Mossos d'Esquadra, who are now leading the investigation. Police have kept the investigation open and do not rule out further arrests as they gather more evidence.
Rising Security Concerns in Barcelona
This incident adds to growing concerns about public safety in Barcelona, particularly regarding knife crime. Just one week prior, Guàrdia Urbana officers arrested a minor for stabbing a man in Carrer de la Cera, located in the Raval district. Police sources reported that the attacker, who was with his partner, had allegedly been a victim of a robbery by a group including the deceased. Additionally, a group attack near the Fòrum, close to where the Feria d'Abril was taking place, left another person with knife injuries last week.
Political Calls for Action on Crime
Following recent shootings, which resulted in at least one fatality, Jordi Martí Galbis, the President of Junts at the Ajuntament, urged Mayor Jaume Collboni to address Barcelona's "grave security crisis." Mr Martí Galbis stated, "Every weekend we receive news of knife attacks, shootings, violent fights, or criminal acts that generate increasing social alarm." These events highlight a perceived rise in violent crime affecting residents and visitors across the city, prompting calls for stronger measures.
Ongoing Investigation
The Mossos d'Esquadra continue their investigation into the Port Olímpic stabbing. Officials expect to provide more updates as the inquiry progresses, potentially leading to additional arrests. This ongoing police work aims to bring all individuals involved in the attack to justice and enhance safety in the area.
