Manga Barcelona returns to Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue from December 5-8 for its 31st edition, featuring special guests from legendary anime franchises.
This year’s event promises to be particularly significant, bringing Takashi Matsuyama, the former assistant to Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, to Catalan shores for the first time.

Matsuyama worked closely with the celebrated mangaka Akira Toriyama, who passed away in March 2024.

His presence offers fans a unique opportunity to learn about the creative process behind one of the world’s most influential manga series. Furthermore, the event will host Shinichiro Watanabe, director of the cult classic Cowboy Bebop, alongside composer Yoko Kanno, the SEATBELTS band, and vocalist Mai Yamane.
The collaboration represents a comprehensive celebration of the retro-futuristic series that masterfully blended space adventures with 1990s aesthetics. Additionally, visitors can meet other renowned creators including Tsutomu Takahashi, presenting his new comics ‘Jumbo Max’ and ‘Guitar Shop Rosie’, and character designer Akemi Takada, known for Lamu, Creamy Mami and Madoka.
The salon will feature three special screenings coinciding with their premiere on 3Cat, though specific titles remain under wraps. This partnership reflects Barcelona’s growing commitment to cinematic culture across various genres and formats.
According to the official announcement, Catalan public television has significantly strengthened its anime programming in recent months. The channel has revived ‘Dragon Ball’ while broadcasting series like ‘One Piece’ and ‘Inazuma Eleven’, among others.
Event organisers have teased a special surprise for Monday, December 8 at 1:30pm, promising “many Pikachus running through the Manga Auditorium.” Content advisor Oriol Estrada expressed enthusiasm about the 3Cat collaboration, emphasising the importance of public television supporting anime content.
The Manga Barcelona edition will maintain its traditional spaces dedicated to Japanese gastronomy (Nihon Ryori), children’s programming (Manga Kids), and Japanese culture (Nihongo Experience). Consequently, the event continues to offer a comprehensive cultural experience beyond mere comic book appreciation.
