In Manresa, a chlorine leak at an industrial company in the Bufalvent estate on Tuesday morning, 26 May, activated Catalonia’s Plaseqcat emergency plan. Nine people received medical attention, and three were taken to Hospital Althaia in Manresa with minor injuries.
The alert came in at 07:06 through the 112 emergency number, Protecció Civil said on X. The leak started after an exothermic reaction in an outdoor container holding a large amount of swimming pool waste and other materials, which created a toxic cloud.
Emergency crews moved in quickly, including 17 units from the Bombers de la Generalitat. The response included two chemical risk vans, the Operational Support Group, a joint Bombers and Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques unit, and the Technological Incident Support Group. They worked with company staff to seal the leak and neutralise the reaction.
The Mossos d’Esquadra sent five patrols to the site and closed access to the affected area. Workers in nearby buildings were told to stay indoors, while other businesses in the industrial estate kept operating.
After the leak was contained, the Bombers carried out environmental checks inside the facility and in nearby premises. The tests came back negative for chlorine, so authorities deactivated the Plaseqcat plan. The plan, Pla d’Emergència Exterior del Sector Químic de Catalunya, is used to coordinate responses to chemical incidents across Catalonia.
