Manresa Emergency Drill Simulates Real Tunnel Collapse
Civil Protection and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) organised the early morning simulation of a landslide at the tunnel’s northern entrance. The scenario involved a train entering the tunnel toward Barcelona when the collapse occurred, with 50 passengers onboard. Consequently, 40 people required medical attention for various injuries including trauma, burns, and contusions.

The Medical Emergency System (SEM) received the alert through the 112 emergency number and immediately activated their Multiple Victim Incident protocol. Furthermore, they deployed 25 professionals across 10 units, including psychological support teams. The SEM coordinated medical care and transferred patients to a secure triage area for assessment.
Meanwhile, Mossos d’Esquadra participated with four units from their Citizen Security division. Civil Protection personnel managed logistical operations and family assistance services. Additionally, FGC contributed approximately 15 staff members to the comprehensive exercise.
Agnes Centelles, Civil Protection chief for Central Catalonia, emphasised the value of such complex drills. She stated that these exercises allow emergency services to evaluate themselves, improve coordination, and identify areas for enhancement. Similarly, Francesc Jiménez from FGC highlighted how these simulations train their staff while strengthening coordination with emergency bodies.
This training comes at a time when transport security remains a priority concern across the region. The Manresa emergency drill represents ongoing efforts to maintain preparedness for potential incidents affecting public transport infrastructure.
According to official reports, the exercise focused particularly on the Llobregat-Anoia line. These regular drills help emergency services refine their response strategies and communication protocols. Therefore, the Manresa emergency drill serves as a crucial component of regional safety planning.
