Emergency services received an alert about the discovery shortly after 11:00 on Saturday, 7 March. Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra and paramedics from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) were sent to the scene. Upon arrival, medical personnel could only confirm the man’s death.
Investigation Rules Out Foul Play
Police sources indicate the body showed no initial signs of criminality, leading investigators to treat the case as a tragic accident. According to a report by Metrópoli Abierta, authorities are confident no third party was involved.
A spokesperson for the Mossos d’Esquadra confirmed an autopsy is pending. This procedure will be crucial for formally establishing the exact cause and circumstances of the man’s death. Until those results are available, authorities have not released the deceased’s identity.
A Sombre Discovery in a Popular Town
Castelldefels is a prominent municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, known for its extensive beaches and as a popular residential area for commuters and expatriates. Its main beach, a continuous five-kilometre stretch of sand, is divided into sections; El Baixador is one of its well-known areas.
The discovery has cast a pall over the tranquil seaside community. While a peaceful town, Castelldefels has not been without incident in recent months. Last year, the area faced a significant vegetation fire which burned a hectare of woodland bordering neighbouring Gavà. Additionally, residents successfully thwarted an attempt by squatters to occupy a local property.
Second Such Incident in Recent Weeks
This incident comes just weeks after an elderly woman’s body was found in the Besòs River, which marks Barcelona city’s northern boundary. In that case, investigators also ruled the death accidental, even though the victim sustained a head injury.
The Besòs area has been the focus of major urban renewal projects, with a significant revamp of its waterfront aiming to redefine the local tourist map. However, the river itself can be hazardous, particularly after heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to occasionally close the surrounding park due to swelling river levels.
Authorities have not indicated any connection between the two events, treating them as separate, unrelated tragedies. The investigation into the death in Castelldefels continues.
