A routine police patrol in a Martorell industrial estate led to the seizure of 78 kilograms of marijuana and the arrest of a 40-year-old man, whose potent smell of the drug clinging to his clothes proved his undoing.

The incident occurred on Monday, 16 March, in Martorell, a key industrial hub in the Baix Llobregat comarca just west of Barcelona. Police detained the suspect, who has no prior criminal record, on charges of a public health offence related to drug trafficking.
A Telltale Scent
Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, the autonomous police force of Catalonia, were on patrol in a local industrial estate when they spotted a man leaving a warehouse. According to a report by Catalan news outlet El Caso, the man’s suspicious behaviour, which involved constantly surveying his surroundings, drew the patrol’s attention.
As officers approached to identify him, they immediately noticed a very strong odour of marijuana emanating from his clothing. This powerful olfactory clue, so strong it required no assistance from a canine unit, provided sufficient grounds to search the man’s vehicle.
Inside the car, police discovered three large backpacks, all giving off the same distinct smell. One of the bags contained three smaller pouches filled with marijuana, confirming the officers’ suspicions and prompting a wider investigation.
Warehouse Uncovers Larger Haul
With the initial discovery made, the officers called for backup to conduct a thorough search of the industrial warehouse from which the man had just emerged. Once reinforcements arrived, they entered the building to determine the extent of the operation.
Inside, the search quickly yielded a significant find. Police located vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana that matched the branding and labelling of those found in the suspect’s car. They also discovered two large pallets loaded with what appeared to be clothing. However, concealed within cardboard boxes among the garments were numerous other bags filled with marijuana.
Investigators believe the clothes were being used as a simple but effective method to camouflage the drugs for transport and concealment. In addition to the narcotics, officers also found a high-end car inside the warehouse which was listed in police databases as stolen.
After cataloguing all the evidence from both the car and the warehouse, the total seized marijuana weighed 78 kilograms. Police arrested the suspect, who has since been handed over to the judicial authorities.
An Isolated Incident
Despite the size of the haul, the Mossos d’Esquadra do not expect to make further arrests in connection with this case. They consider the 40-year-old man the sole individual involved in this operation, confirming that other people present at the industrial unit had no connection to the illegal activity.
This seizure is the latest in a series of significant drug operations in the Barcelona metropolitan area. It follows a recent 110kg hashish bust in nearby Abrera, also in the Baix Llobregat region, and the dismantling of a major drug ring with links to the Italian Camorra. Such cases often highlight how minor observations can lead to major arrests, reminiscent of a recent incident where a driver was caught with 2.4kg of cocaine simply due to poor parking.
