Guardia Civil officers successfully rescued five people from a recreational boat adrift off Mataró beach on 1 May. The vessel experienced engine failure, leaving its occupants stranded near the coast of the popular Maresme town, a frequent destination for Barcelona residents.

Urgent Call for Assistance

The incident started around 11:50 when a coastal patrol received an urgent call from the disabled boat. It was initially located approximately 1.85 kilometres (one nautical mile) from Mataró beach. The Guardia Civil, responsible for maritime surveillance, regularly conducts patrols along the Catalan coastline. Their patrol boat, positioned 27.78 kilometres (15 nautical miles) away, reached the scene in about 50 minutes.

Safe Tow to Mataró Port

Rescuers found the boat 500 metres from the north breakwater of Mataró port and 300 metres from the beach. After confirming no water had entered the vessel, agents secured a tow rope from their patrol boat's stern. They then safely towed the disabled craft back to Mataró port. Mataró, a significant coastal city in the Maresme region, attracts many recreational boaters and beachgoers.

All Occupants Unharmed

All five individuals disembarked without injuries. This meant no medical assistance or hospital transfers were necessary. The swift response by the Guardia Civil prevented a potentially serious situation for the five individuals. It also highlights the importance of maritime safety protocols along the busy Catalan coast, particularly as the summer boating season approaches. The incident shows the critical role of emergency services in ensuring safety for those enjoying the Mediterranean waters.
