Mataró is joining Catalonia’s annual Nature Week with a city programme of more than a dozen activities from 22 May to 5 June. The events, led by Mataró City Council and local organisations, focus on sustainability, biodiversity and the city’s natural heritage.
The line-up includes guided tours, family workshops, exhibitions, shows and activities linked to the environment. The council says the programme is part of its wider work on climate action, urban renaturalisation and protecting biodiversity.
One of the main events is a guided visit to the Municipal Plant Nursery on Saturday, 23 May, run by the Gardening Service. It will show how plants for urban green spaces are produced and explain the sustainable gardening methods used to help Mataró adapt to climate change.
Other activities focus on urban nature and water. Capell House will host community events on biodiversity and climate adaptation, including the guided outing Central Park, Climate Refuge on 23 May and a family workshop at Pompeu Fabra Library on 30 May, where participants will build insect refuge hotels.
Can Boet, Mataró Archaeological and Natural Heritage Centre, will also run two activities linked to the Argentona Stream, one on 24 May and another on 30 May. The second route is part of the Maresme Nesting Bird Atlas project and will look at the birds that live along the stream.
The library network is taking part too. Pompeu Fabra Library will host a travelling exhibition on the Litoral Mountain Range Park from 4 May to 5 June, plus a story time session on 26 May and a talk and workshop on nesting birds on 5 June. Antoni Comas Library will stage the literary show The Secret on 4 June and a documentary exhibition from 26 May to 6 June. Mataró Water, SA (AMSA) will also run the Water Route on 30 May, with visits to historical water infrastructure including the Trinxeria Mine, Genoese Wall distributors and the Ca l’Arenes siphon.
Some activities have limited places and need prior registration. Full details are available on the official Nature Week website and on the websites of the participating venues. For more local coverage, see our Barcelona sport and community pages.
