Mataró residents face higher council taxes next year after Monday’s council meeting approved provisional tax changes for 2026. Property tax (IBI) will rise 4% whilst bin collection charges increase 2.38%.

The property tax rate will hit 0.6959%, pushing the average residential bill from 571 euros to 595 euros. However, the council says this 4% rise is lower than last year’s 5% increase, keeping a promise made to the Junts party group.
Meanwhile, Mataró argues other comparable towns in Barcelona province charge less. The council currently applies a rate of 0.6691% when it could legally go up to 1.23%, meaning they’re only using 32.42% of their potential taxing power. The new rate would take this to 35.65%.
Rubbish collection costs will also climb, with the average resident paying 185.34 euros instead of 180.74 euros. This 2.38% rise is much gentler than last year’s 11.79% jump.
On the plus side, the council is boosting tax breaks for families. The maximum property tax discount for large families rises from 275 to 300 euros. There’s also a new 50% discount on construction tax for building new social housing or major renovations.
The budget grows just 0.76% to 173.8 million euros, up 1.3 million on 2025. The council says higher taxes will let them improve social services, rubbish collection, street cleaning and security whilst covering legally required salary increases for staff.
