Lionel Messi has acquired UE Cornellà, a fifth-tier Catalan football club competing in the Tercera Federació division. The club statement, released on Thursday, confirmed the move reinforces the Inter Miami player's commitment to developing sport and local talent in Catalonia.

UE Cornellà currently sits third in their league standings, five points adrift of the summit but in a playoff position with a realistic chance of securing promotion. The club's ownership by Messi marks what the organisation describes as "the beginning of a new chapter in the club's history."

Strategic Investment in Youth Development

Messi's acquisition aims to "drive both sporting and institutional growth, strengthening its foundations, and continuing to invest in talent," according to the club statement. The project operates under "a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots."

UE Cornellà has established itself as a significant talent pipeline for elite-level football. The club has developed numerous players who have progressed to the highest echelons of the game, including David Raya, Jordi Alba, Gerard Martín, Javi Puado, and Aitor Ruibal.

Youth Pathway Success

These players "reflect the strength and success of the club's development model," the statement emphasises. Messi's commitment to nurturing young talent aligns with UE Cornellà's robust youth structure, which features teams competing in top youth categories at both national and regional levels.

Geographically, UE Cornellà's home stadium occupies grounds practically adjacent to RCD Espanyol's stadium, with the two facilities separated by approximately ten metres. The acquisition represents Messi's continued connection to Catalan football following his departure from FC Barcelona in 2021.
