Metalworkers strike protests have caused major traffic disruptions across Barcelona’s key road networks this morning.

The industrial action, involving approximately 180,000 workers, has led to coordinated roadblocks on major arteries including the Ronda del Litoral and connecting routes since early Wednesday.
According to reports from the Catalan Traffic Service, the Ronda Litoral was completely blocked in both directions near Mercabarna around 8:30am. Consequently, this created significant knock-on effects for the A-2, B-23, C-31 and C-32 highways heading southbound.
Metalworkers Strike Creates 8km Traffic Queues
Northbound traffic experienced particularly severe conditions, with queues stretching approximately 8 kilometres from Mercabarna to Sant Adrià de Besòs. Furthermore, protestors also blocked the C-32 in Cornellà de Llobregat toward Sitges, creating additional congestion throughout the metropolitan area.
While some routes began reopening around 8:45am, including the C-32 in both directions and the Ronda Litoral toward Llobregat, the Trinitat direction remained blocked. Additionally, picketing workers have blocked access to several metal sector companies in Barcelona’s Zona Franca industrial area.
The strike follows failed mediation attempts between unions and employers regarding collective bargaining agreements. CCOO and UGT unions called the 48-hour stoppage, which began at 6:00am Wednesday and will continue until 6:00am Friday. Night shift workers actually began their action on Tuesday at 10:00pm.
Union representatives claim employer organisations remain “entrenched in their positions,” while the Metal Employers Union (UPM) maintains they presented a “balanced proposal” that should have been sufficient to call off the strike. This industrial action comes amid broader economic pressures affecting workers across the region, as recent inflation data shows continued price increases impacting household budgets.
Transport authorities are advising motorists to seek alternative routes and allow extra journey time. The disruptions highlight how industrial relations in key sectors can significantly impact Barcelona’s transport infrastructure and daily commute patterns. Meanwhile, the situation demonstrates ongoing tensions in the regional economy as workers seek improved conditions amid challenging economic circumstances.
