Routine Early Morning Inspection
Around 05:30 local time, the Fiscal Unit of the Guardia Civil stopped the coach at the La Jonquera service area. These checks are standard procedure. They aim to identify passengers and prevent cross-border crime, including drug trafficking.
During the inspection, officers examined the luggage compartment of the vehicle. Police reports state that agents checked suitcases one by one. They identified suspicious packages in the luggage belonging to one passenger. Upon opening the suitcase, they discovered multiple packages containing a crystalline substance.
Officers confirmed the substance as methamphetamine. The total weight was 25.99 kilograms. They identified the owner of the suitcase, who was travelling on the bus. Therefore, authorities arrested him immediately for an alleged crime against public health.
Investigation and Detention
Following his arrest, the suspect appeared before the Court of Instruction in Figueres. The presiding judge ordered his provisional detention while legal proceedings continue.
Although the courier is now behind bars, the Guardia Civil’s investigation remains active. Detectives are working to establish the origin of the drugs. Additionally, they want to confirm their intended final destination. Authorities are determining whether the shipment was meant for distribution in Lyon, where the bus was headed. Alternatively, it may have been scheduled for another location within France or Europe.
International Bus Lines as Drug Corridors
This arrest highlights a persistent challenge for border authorities. Long-distance bus lines departing from or passing through Catalonia have become a documented method for traffickers. They attempt to export narcotics into northern Europe. Security forces frequently conduct similar operations at key transport hubs. These include La Jonquera and the Barcelona Nord station. The operations aim to disrupt these supply chains. Despite overall crime falling in Barcelona, drug trafficking saw increases. This highlights the ongoing efforts to combat this issue. Moreover, the recent methamphetamine seizure La Jonquera demonstrates these continued enforcement actions.
