Barcelona’s metro is opening 1,000 more places to visit the Gaudí ghost station this year. The never-used platform opens to the public this weekend, but all 720 initial tickets sold out on 9 September alongside 5,000 other spots for special metro tours marking the network’s centenary.

Right now, TMB’s website obrimelmetro.cat faced complete meltdown when bookings opened. The system recorded nearly 5 million attempts to access the site, far more than it could handle.
The station has been prepared specially for its public debut. It never entered service, so this weekend marks the first time large crowds will step onto its platforms. TMB installed barriers separating the platform from the tracks, created an exhibition about the metro’s centenary history, and added atmospheric lighting.
However, this time TMB is changing the booking system. Instead of a mad rush where the fastest win, they’ll open registration for several days and then hold a lottery. Each winner can bring one companion along.
Previously, successful bookers could only bring a child as their plus-one. Meanwhile, the new 1,000 places will be spread across three more weekends before the year ends.
TMB will announce the exact dates and registration period soon. The transport authority is finalising all the details for the additional weekend openings.
