Barcelona’s city government has approved plans for a 380 square metre lobby connecting Glòries L1 metro station directly with the Disseny Hub Barcelona. The connection will open in 2026, creating the first direct link between metro and a public cultural facility in the city.

The project follows examples from major European museums. London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and Paris’s Louvre already offer similar metro connections. However, this marks Barcelona’s first attempt at integrating public transport with cultural spaces.

Barcelona’s Amoo Studio SCP won the design competition run by the Museu del Disseny and FAD. Their proposal will improve access from Parc and Llacuna neighbourhoods in Poblenou. The lobby will connect to the museum’s rear entrance on the ground floor.

The space won’t just serve commuters. It will also showcase cultural events and exhibitions. This dual purpose aims to bring more Poblenou residents into the museum whilst offering a shortcut to the metro.

Construction is budgeted at around one million euros. Work should begin in early 2026 and finish by summer. The timing coincides with Barcelona’s year as World Capital of Architecture. Meanwhile, DHUB will host the International Union of Architects congress.

TMB president Laia Bonet called the approval another step in transforming Glòries. She described the area as a major hub for public transport, facilities, and housing.
