Pepe Álvarez, the General Secretary of the General Union of Workers (UGT), has thrown his full support behind the government’s initiative for migrant regularisation. This plan aims to regularise the status of approximately half a million migrants in Spain. Speaking from Tortosa during a press conference on labour rights, Álvarez described the measure as essential for social cohesion. The city previously addressed similar concerns when recent immigration fraud network dismantled in Barcelona.
Migrant Regularisation: A Necessary Step for Labour Rights
During his address, the union leader validated the pact between PSOE and Podemos. He emphasised that bringing these workers out of the shadow economy is a moral and practical imperative. Therefore, formalising the status of these individuals is crucial not only for their personal dignity but for the stability of the labour market.

“It is an absolutely necessary step for coexistence and for the rights of these people, who will be able to stop working under irregular conditions.”Pepe Álvarez, UGT General Secretary
Defending the Catalan Funding Agreement
Beyond migration policy, Álvarez also used the platform to defend the recent funding agreement reached between the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the Socialist Party (PSOE). The deal, which addresses the financing of the Catalan administration, has been a subject of significant political debate. In addition, the UGT’s endorsement comes at a critical time, lending significant weight to the coalition government’s social and economic agenda.
