A 44-year-old Montenegrin man, Krsto Vujic, has died after an assailant shot him on Tuesday afternoon in Barcelona's Poblenou district. Police are now investigating the incident as a homicide, suspecting a criminal gang-related settling of scores.

Vujic, a fugitive on Interpol's red list, was wanted for a 2020 murder in Montenegro. Interpol's red list alerts law enforcement worldwide to internationally wanted fugitives. Vujic's presence on this list indicates the high-profile nature of his alleged crimes. He had reportedly sought refuge in Barcelona for months, according to La Vanguardia.

Homicide Investigation Underway

Mossos d'Esquadra sources confirmed Vujic's death to EFE on Sunday, stating they are now treating the case as a completed homicide. The shooting occurred around 15:50 on Tuesday at the Kibo café terrace. This popular establishment is on Passeig del Taulat, near Selva de Mar street. Sources close to the case told EFE that Vujic sustained multiple bullet impacts and a neck wound. Emergency medical services (SEM) attended to Vujic at the scene. They subsequently transferred him in a serious condition to Hospital del Mar.

Poblenou Incident Details

The Poblenou neighbourhood, part of the Sant Martí district, is a vibrant area. It attracts both residents and tourists. The Kibo café, known for brunch and cocktails, is frequented by locals and visitors alike. Neighbours in Poblenou told EFE that Vujic lived locally. They added he was a regular customer at the café where the shooting took place. The Sant Martí district, home to over 240,000 residents, has seen significant urban development in recent years. This incident, however, raises concerns among the local community and visitors about public safety.

Broader Context of Gang Violence

Police are investigating the primary hypothesis of a "settling of scores" between criminal groups. This incident echoes a similar event in July last year. A man was shot dead on Carrer de Consell de Cent in a dispute between rival Balkan gangs. These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about organised crime in the city. Authorities are working to reassure the public while pursuing their investigation.

The investigation into Vujic's death continues. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the fatal shooting. This case underscores the challenges Barcelona faces in tackling international criminal networks.
