Visitors planning to ascend Barcelona’s iconic Montjuïc hill this February must adjust their travel plans. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has announced the temporary suspension of both the Montjuïc cable car and the funicular for mandatory annual maintenance. This Montjuïc cable car closure will begin on Monday, 2 February 2026. Consequently, we previously covered related accessibility works on the L5 metro station at Sants Square.
The closure will last until Sunday, 1 March 2026. Normal service should resume once TMB completes a comprehensive technical review. Therefore, this maintenance ensures the safety and reliability of these vital transport links. Meanwhile, Barcelona also offers free museum entry on the first Sunday of February.

Montjuïc Cable Car Closure: Alternative Transport Options
TMB has established alternative transport measures to minimise disruption during the Montjuïc cable car closure and funicular suspension. In addition, the city is preparing for a unique four-day festival experience in February 2026.
Funicular Replacement Service
A special bus service will operate between Paral·lel and the Montjuïc station, replacing the funicular. This replacement service will mirror the standard funicular timetable.
- Weekdays: 07:30 to 20:00
- Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays: 09:00 to 20:00
Cable Car Alternatives
For visitors wishing to reach the summit and Montjuïc Castle, TMB recommends using regular bus line 150. This route connects Plaça Espanya to the castle, providing a reliable alternative. Furthermore, the line 150 bus operates daily from 07:00 to 21:00.
These annual technical reviews are a standard safety procedure. However, they ensure the reliability of the transport systems that carry thousands of visitors up the mountain each year. For more information on transport updates, visit the official TMB website.
