Barcelona’s iconic Magic Fountain of Montjuïc has completed a major electroacoustic system upgrade. This renovation introduces advanced technology and new internal speakers, promising a homogeneous, high-quality sound experience for visitors. The Barcelona City Council confirmed the improvements, which also aim to minimise acoustic impact on nearby residents.

The new system expands sound coverage to previously underserved areas around the fountain. It also ensures compliance with current noise regulations. “This action concludes one of the most important reforms of the Magic Fountain since the 1990s,” stated the Ajuntament. They added it “will contribute to making the shows a true experience of water, light and sound.”
Enhancing Montjuïc’s Iconic Fountain
This sound system upgrade is part of the Integral Maintenance Plan (PMI). The PMI itself falls under the broader Plan Endreça Barcelona, a city-wide initiative. Plan Endreça includes nearly 3,000 planned actions across the city until 2028. These works aim to optimise the functioning of Barcelona’s ornamental fountains. They also improve access, enhance facility safety, and guarantee water quality.
Broader Renovation Efforts
Last year, the PMI facilitated other significant improvements at the Magic Fountain. These included an upgraded telecontrol system, offering greater flexibility and reliability. Additionally, the fountain’s lighting system saw a major overhaul. Workers replaced 4,760 incandescent spotlights with 680 energy-efficient LED units. This change maintains the original luminous potential. However, it drastically reduces power consumption from 1,507 kW to just 72 kW. This makes the installation significantly more sustainable. The improvements honour the essence of the fountain’s original 1929 design by Carles Buïgas.
Temporary Show Suspensions
To finalise the internal sound system’s renewal, the Magic Fountain shows will pause. Performances at both the Magic Fountain and the Maria Cristina Axis will pause on 9, 10, and 11 April. This temporary closure allows technicians to complete the intricate installation work. The Ajuntament is investing a total of 6.6 million euros until 2028 into the city’s ornamental fountains. This substantial investment ensures their continued optimal operation and public enjoyment.
Residents and tourists can anticipate an even more immersive and environmentally conscious experience at the Magic Fountain. The comprehensive upgrades ensure this beloved Barcelona landmark remains a world-class attraction for years to come.
