Montserrat cable car replacement plans have been officially launched as the historic transport system approaches its centenary.
The iconic Aeri de Montserrat, which began operation in 1930, will be completely replaced by a modern cable car system designed to handle significantly more passengers and meet contemporary safety standards.
This landmark decision comes after years of discussion about improving access to the famous mountain monastery.

Furthermore, the current system’s limitations have become increasingly apparent, with long queues discouraging visitors and capacity constraints affecting the overall visitor experience.
Montserrat Cable Car Replacement Details
The Abbey of Montserrat has signed a collaboration protocol with the Catalan government’s territory department to advance the construction project. According to recent government announcements, the new system will feature enhanced capacity, improved safety measures, and greater reliability.
Territory Councillor Sílvia Paneque emphasised the necessity of the upgrade, stating: “It needs to be renewed to provide more capacity, more safety, more reliability and a better access experience.” Consequently, two working groups have been established to develop the technical and legal aspects of the project.
The proposed solution involves a public-private partnership between the Abbey and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC). However, specific investment figures, construction timelines, and ownership percentages remain undetermined at this early stage.
Montserrat’s abbot, Manel Gasch, described the agreement as “the starting point of a journey that with everyone’s good disposition will reach a good port.” This development coincides with the conclusion of Montserrat’s millennium celebrations and addresses long-standing accessibility concerns.
The Montserrat cable car replacement forms part of a broader mobility plan prioritising collective transport over private vehicles. Additionally, improvements will be made to the connection between the FGC station and the cable car, mirroring the successful integration already achieved between the train and rack railway in Monistrol de Montserrat.
Road access and parking facilities will also undergo evaluation as part of the comprehensive plan. The ultimate objective is reducing traffic congestion on the mountain roads, which regularly experience significant delays during peak periods and holidays.
This infrastructure upgrade aims to benefit Montserrat’s 2.5 million annual visitors while supporting sustainable tourism development. The project represents a significant step toward modernising one of Catalonia’s most important cultural and religious sites.
