The Montserrat Market opening in Barcelona’s Nou Barris district begins next week. Residents of the Roquetes neighbourhood will see the first phase commence on 28 January with the ALDI supermarket. Meanwhile, the full transition for fresh food traders is scheduled for March. Further details have been confirmed about the ALDI supermarket opening on January 28th.
Barcelona City Council is finalising the schedule for the long-awaited facility, which replaces an obsolete structure dating back to 1960. Therefore, this project stands out because it involved constructing a completely new building on an adjacent plot. In addition, unlike other recent market renovations, traders did not need temporary marquees.

Montserrat Market Opening: Phased Schedule
The new complex features a split design across two levels. The ground floor houses an Aldi supermarket, which has confirmed its opening date for 28 January. In contrast, the traditional market, comprising 17 fresh produce stalls, is located on the first floor.
Sources from the City Council confirmed to El Nacional that the two sections would operate independently during this initial period. The decision to delay the fresh food stalls’ opening until March was reached in agreement with the traders. This allows them to find the most suitable moment to transfer their equipment and stock.
Montserrat Market Opening: Construction and Timeline
The project stands out among Barcelona’s market renovations because traders continued working in the original building. The new structure was built next door at the junction of Via Favència and Carrer Aiguablava. Once the move is complete, the old building will be partially demolished.
This Montserrat Market opening comes significantly later than originally planned. Tendering documents initially forecast that the market would be operational by the second half of 2024. The project’s timeline reflects a broader trend of other municipal infrastructure projects facing delays across the city. Furthermore, the scale of the market has also changed over time. The facility originally hosted 80 stalls when it opened six decades ago, compared to the 17 traders moving to the new site.
The new market will primarily serve residents in Roquetes, Verdum, and Prosperitat. It will also serve the neighbouring Trinitat Nova district, which maintains its own market facility. This development is welcome news for the area. However, the wider area also contends with recent incidents in the Nou Barris district.
