Barcelona's Museu de la Música has honoured legendary organist Montserrat Torrent on her 100th birthday with a special tribute and the opening of a new exhibition. The event marked a significant milestone for the acclaimed musician, celebrated by numerous admirers and students.
The tribute at the museum included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Torrent herself performed Antonio Cabezón's "Pavana con su glosa" on the museum's Pérez Moreno organ. Earlier on her birthday, Catalan Government President Salvador Illa privately presented her with a centenary medal.
Celebrating a Centenary Organist
This celebration forms part of the "Any Montserrat Torrent" (Montserrat Torrent Year), decreed by the Catalan Government. Other notable events include an organ concert at Barcelona Cathedral on Wednesday, 15th April. Another concert will take place at the Palau de la Música Catalana on Saturday, 18th April. The museum event concluded with Torrent blowing out her 100th birthday candles, showcasing her enduring energy and humour.
New Exhibition: Montserrat Torrent. A punt d'orgue
The exhibition, titled "Montserrat Torrent. A punt d'orgue" (Montserrat Torrent. On the Verge of Organ Music), opened simultaneously. Journalist Mònica Pagès i Santacana curated this comprehensive display. It offers an exhaustive journey through Torrent's illustrious career. The exhibition features numerous documents from her personal archive. Visitors can explore key episodes, such as her involvement in recording the "Antologia Històrica de la Música Catalana" (Historical Anthology of Catalan Music). Oriol Martorell directed this project for the Edigsa record label. The exhibition highlights her broad repertoire, spanning from medieval to contemporary music. This reflects her international career, which has taken her to stages worldwide. The exhibition will remain open until 11th October.
Future Performances and Legacy
Montserrat Torrent continues her active performance schedule. She will perform concerts in Ávila and Madrid next week. On 18th May, she will inaugurate an organ named after her at the Església de Sant Felip Neri. This fulfils a long-held dream for the celebrated organist.
