Mossos d’Esquadra have integrated an artificial intelligence agent named CyberRAG into their operational structure.
The pioneering tool, developed by officers within the force’s own IT division, operates around the clock to detect digital threats against Catalan police and administration.

According to a report in La Vanguardia, the AI scans Telegram, Bluesky, the open web, and even the dark web for security risks.
How CyberRAG Transforms Mossos d’Esquadra Operations
CyberRAG’s primary function is constant data gathering and analysis. It compiles information into a virtual library and generates immediate reports on potential incidents. Consequently, its speed and access to vast information sources surpass human capability. The system is currently in a testing phase at the Horta-Guinardó station in Barcelona.
Commissioner Miquel Àngel García Alvira presented the project with evident pride. He emphasised that the virtual officer is a product of internal talent. Furthermore, a corporal from the cybersecurity unit created the agent alongside a trainee officer. The force actively recruited the ten best technology-trained candidates from this year’s police academy intake to work on such innovations.
This initiative is part of a broader technological shift. Commissioner Alvira confirmed that CyberRAG is merely the first of many AI agents planned for different organisational areas. These will span citizen services, patrol coordination, and criminal investigation. The Mossos d’Esquadra are therefore positioning AI as a fundamental, transversal component of future policing.
Virtual Stations and the Future of Policing
The force will launch a new virtual police station in July. This platform will allow citizens to report certain crimes, like cyber fraud or payment issues, without visiting a physical station. A prototype virtual agent named Mia was showcased at the recent Mobile World Congress. Meanwhile, the Mossos d’Esquadra are also developing a confidential, internal ChatGPT-style tool for officers to manage secure data and procedures.
However, the integration of Mossos d’Esquadra artificial intelligence comes with careful management. Intendent Joan Carles Escobar stressed that “AI alone is nothing.” The leadership is actively working to manage the cultural shift AI brings. Their goal is to adopt new technology without losing the essential human values and ethics required in policing. Additionally, they aim to support all officers through this transition, ensuring no one is left behind by the digital divide.
The Mossos d’Esquadra’s embrace of artificial intelligence marks a significant step in modern law enforcement. It demonstrates a proactive approach to digital threats and administrative efficiency.
