Mossos D’Esquadra Plan: Key Details
For approximately five years, statistics have shown a persistent problem. But until now, there hasn’t been a centralised strategy to address it across the entire region. However, the traffic commissioner’s investigation unit has just 17 officers spread across four small delegations.
So the new plan is a significant development. It follows a written question from the Junts per Catalunya parliamentary group about the increase in these crimes. However, after the query, police director Josep Lluís Trapero met with the heads of the mobility division.
Specialised Gangs and Recent Successes
The criminals are highly specialised. ‘Pincharruedas’ (tyre slashers) often target foreign-registered vehicles. However, they damage tyres in service areas, follow the victim until they are forced to stop. Then offer ‘help’ that leads to robbery.
Meanwhile, the activity of ‘losteloneros’ (canvas cutters) has skyrocketed in recent months. These organised groups slash the canvases of parked lorries to steal cargo for resale.
Currently, coffee capsules and rolling papers are top targets. But perfume, cosmetics, branded clothing, non-perishable food, and manageable electronics are also frequently stolen.
Investigators from the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi unit in Barcelona had been monitoring a group of ‘aluniceros’-thieves who ram vehicles into shop windows to steal goods in seconds.
With this information, the Mossos split the investigation. In several phases, they arrested ten suspects. One was sent to prison. Police also located two warehouses storing stolen goods. However, the first, in Cabrera de Mar, contained products worth over half a million euros from at least 14 looted lorries. Meanwhile, the second, in Montcada i Reixac, was a dilapidated shack used by the ‘aluniceros’ to hide their haul.
This successful operation demonstrates the potential impact of focused, intelligence-led policing. Stay connected with us on social media for the latest updates and news!
