Eviction Triggered by Owner’s Complaint
Police sources informed Metrópoli that the eviction stemmed from a flagrant crime. The property owner reported the illegal occupation earlier that morning. They discovered a group from the Sindicat d’Habitatge had entered their properties.
Housing Union Organises Protest
The Sindicat d’Habitatge de la Verneda i el Besòs issued a statement via social media around 17:00. They alerted the public that Mossos were attempting to evict three families associated with their union. The union called for a mobilisation to prevent the eviction.
Approximately 50 people gathered throughout the afternoon in response to the union’s call. However, the Mossos d’Esquadra proceeded with the eviction despite the protest. Police confirmed the action was necessary due to the nature of the flagrant crime.
Poblenou’s Housing Tensions
Poblenou, part of the Sant Martí district, has experienced significant urban transformation. This area, once industrial, now blends residential and technological hubs. Incidents involving illegal occupation, or ‘okupación’, remain a recurring issue in Barcelona, particularly in rapidly gentrifying neighbourhoods.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between property rights and housing access in Barcelona. Authorities continue to address illegal occupations, balancing legal procedures with social concerns. The Sindicat d’Habitatge often advocates for families facing housing insecurity.
