Catalonia’s police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, has launched an investigation into a brutal group assault that took place in a central Barcelona park on Saturday night. A young man was left with serious injuries and required hospitalisation following the violent confrontation in the city’s Ciutat Vella district.

The incident took place around 10 PM on 24 February in the Plaça de Josep M. Folch i Torres park. Police sources, confirming initial reports to the news outlet El Caso, state that the victim, who has a prior criminal record, allegedly approached about ten youths while armed with a knife.
The situation escalated rapidly as the group responded with overwhelming force. Video footage of the attack shows the assailants disarming the man before subjecting him to a sustained beating with punches and kicks. He sustained significant injuries, particularly to his face, before the attackers fled, leaving him on the ground. Emergency medical services (SEM) and police attended the scene, transporting the man to hospital. Although his condition is serious, doctors do not believe his life is in danger.
Investigation Focuses on Robbery and Gang Conflict
The Ciutat Vella Mossos d’Esquadra Investigation Unit is now leading the inquiry. Authorities are awaiting a formal statement from the victim to clarify the events leading up to the assault. Investigators primarily believe the man intended to commit a robbery that went wrong, provoking a violent response from his targets.
However, police have not ruled out other motives. A second significant line of inquiry is exploring whether the fight was rooted in ongoing conflicts between organised youth gangs. The assailants were captured on video, and investigators are confident they will be identified as the case progresses.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over public safety and youth violence in certain Barcelona neighbourhoods. Police sources confirmed that in recent weeks, they have increased surveillance and patrols in known ‘hot zones’ across the city. Furthermore, the Mossos d’Esquadra have deployed ‘Tremall’ operations to identify and disrupt violent youth groups, whose often underage members significantly contribute to public insecurity.
Wider Efforts to Improve City Safety
The assault in Ciutat Vella highlights the ongoing challenges faced by both the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya. Recent violent crimes in public spaces, such as the brutal rape reported in Montjuïc Park, have put pressure on authorities to act. In response, the city has been exploring new measures, including a ‘panic button’ app with real-time police tracking and the introduction of new civic by-laws to tackle antisocial behaviour and impunity.
While often related to organised crime or personal disputes, street violence remains a persistent concern for residents. Recent cases, including a fatal stabbing in Sant Andreu where a man died defending his partner, underscore the tragic potential of such confrontations. The investigation into the Plaça de Josep M. Folch i Torres attack continues, with police focused on identifying the perpetrators and establishing a definitive motive.
