Mossos Recover Stolen Christmas ‘Tió’ Logs With Humour
In a light-hearted post on X, formerly Twitter, the Mossos announced they had ‘liberated’ the two logs. “We freed two ‘tions’ before they were kidnapped from the Sagrada Família Christmas fair,” they wrote, accompanied by several festive emojis. “We have reported a man for the theft and returned them so children can feed them well before Christmas Eve.”
The ‘tió’ is one of Catalonia’s oldest Christmas traditions. Throughout December, children ‘feed’ a small log with food scraps, covering it with a blanket. On Christmas Eve, they beat it with sticks while singing traditional songs, and it ‘defecates’ small gifts and sweets. Consequently, the logs are a central part of the seasonal festivities.
The Christmas market, located in the Eixample district, is open until 23 December. It features over 70 stalls selling Christmas trees, nativity figures, gifts, and artisan food products like turrón, cheeses, and cured meats. The market’s atmosphere is a key part of Barcelona’s holiday charm, attracting families and tourists alike.
This incident adds a curious footnote to the city’s festive calendar. Meanwhile, other major city projects continue, such as the Sagrada Família’s 138-year build entering its final phase. Furthermore, the city is bustling with other seasonal activities, including the popular Open House event where Barcelona opens 57 exclusive buildings to the public.
According to the original report from 20 Minutos, the police action ensures the stolen Christmas ‘tió’ logs are back where they belong. Therefore, children can continue the magical ritual of caring for their log in the lead-up to the big night.
